New
Delhi -- India will raise its concern on cyber crime and seek the
help of Interpol's member-countries to deal with it through proper
co-ordination at the agency's general assembly session, beginning
in Berlin, Germany.
The Indian delegation, headed by CBI director U S Misra, will also
take part in deliberations on selected topics, including drug trafficking,
organised crime, public security and terrorism.
"The member-countries will also be updated on the expansion
and success of Interpol's data base, such as those on DNA and stolen
travel documents," a CBI spokesperson said.
The four-day Interpol general assembly session is being attended
by representatives from all 182-member countries of Interpol. The
general assembly session is the most important event on the calendar
of Interpol in which major decisions about its programmes and policies
are taken.
Besides Misra, the Indian delegation also includes Orissa DGP Suchit
Das and joint secretary (security) in the home ministry Rakesh.
India's concern on cyber crime, which is to be taken up during the
session, assumes significance in view of the growing number of such
cases in the country.
"Since some of the crimes with international ramifications
like the one reported recently by the British media concerning alleged
leakage of confidential information by an employee of a Gurgaon-based
call centre have also come to light, India needs the help of the
international body to track such incidents and the criminals involved
in them," said a senior official.
The role of Interpol would turn out to be very important in this
regard as it can assist in nabbing criminals sitting in different
countries, he said, adding proper co-ordination will also help check
spread of cyber crime.
