HYDERABAD: Matrix Laboratories Ltd (MLL), the Hyderabad-based pharma major, has acquired 43 per cent holding in Explora Laboratories S.A, a technology-platform firm based in Mendrisio, Switzerland, engaged in the research and development of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates. Matrix hopes that Explora's expertise in bio-catalysis will be helpful in the development of corticosteroid and other high potency APIs such as anti-molecules.

The Swiss major has already filed two patents to cover its inventions in enzymes immobilisation that is critical for the development of processes involving enzymatic reactions.

In addition to developing niche generic APIs, Explora's technology platforms will also provide an opportunity to Matrix in contract research and manufacturing for multinational branded pharmaceutical companies. Explora is likely to post revenues of two million Swiss francs (CHF) for the calendar year 2005.
