U.S.
stocks eeked out modest gains Monday on the back of soaring crude
oil prices and declining dollar and U.S. bond values.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 9.93, or 0.09 percent, to
10,522.56 on volume of 1.2 billion shares. The Nasdaq composite
gained 5.96, or 0.29 percent, to 2,068.96, and the Standard &
Poor's 500 increased 2.71, or 0.23 percent, to 1,200.82.
Crude oil rose 4 percent to $55.62 per barrel, yields on the 10-year
note topped 4 percent and the dollar kept hammering away at the
euro, good news for Europe-bound travelers from the United States.
The 10-year Treasury note fell 9/32 points or $2.81 per $1,000 invested
to lift the yield to 4.090 percent.
The dollar climbed, hitting 109.53 yen from 107.30 as the euro fell
to $1.2106 from $1.2224.
Tokyo's Nikkei 225 gained 7.28 or 0.1 percent to 11,311.51, and
London's FTSE 100 closed at 5,050.80, rising 20.40 or 0.41 percent.
