Call centre staff make prank calls to Zinta, reprimanded: Indian Express
FRANKFURT, Germany | August 10, 2005 2:12:15 AM IST

Pune, Aug 10: Two call centre employees were among six Pune youths who sent ‘‘prank’’ SMS and made calls to Bollywood actor Preity Zinta last week. The ‘‘pranksters’’, also comprising college students, were let off on a reprimand today.

Police said Uday Nikhalje, Mohasin Shaikh, Tousif Patel, Selvan Lobo, Farook Shaikh and Arif Mirza were only a ‘‘group of pranksters’’ and did not mean harm.

The actor was all praise for the police. ‘‘My congratulations to the Mumbai police for being so efficient and quick. It makes me feel more safe and restores my faith in the system and the Mumbai police,’’ Preity Zinta told The Indian Express.

The police said they brought five of the youngsters — except Shaikh — to Khar police station this morning for questioning. Nikhalje and Shaikh, employees of Pune-based firm Page Point, said they had got the actor’s phone number from their database and had given it to Patel, Lobo and Farook — all students. Page Point is a ‘‘third-party call centre’’ and service provider to Airtel for Maharashtra and Goa. Farook and Patel made several calls to Zinta from Mirza’s cellphone.

The actor had registered a case with the Khar police on August 3, saying she had been receiving prank calls from people claiming to be Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan. ‘‘They (youngsters) were just playing around since they had got the number of a celebrity,’’ senior police inspector at Khar, Satish Shingte, said.

‘‘It is a non-cognisable offence, so we haven’t arrested them,’’ said Amitabh Gupta, DCP, Zone IX.
