Dugan says Indian call centers saturated
(Wednesday, August 10, 2005)

A REPRESENTATIVE of Telstra Australia has urged the country to take advantage of resources available to go into the business outsourcing industry.

Yasmin Dugan said India, which has one of the largest call centres in the world, is becoming saturated and its big factories were already outsourcing to China.

She said that since Fiji now had broadband technology, it was an opportunity for the country to tap the market.

Ms Dugan said Fiji's geographical position, good infrastructure with the Southern Cross cable and literate workforce placed it on an advantage ahead of other countries.

Ms Dugan, with a background in engineering, was brought here by Amalgamated Telecom Holdings to speak on the broadband technology and how it has advanced.

She said the technology has enabled video conferencing, virtual private networks and remote network access.

She added broadband was now more than just fast access with companies using it to train their staff online cutting costs.

Ms Dugan also spoke on 3G, which so far had been introduced in Australia by one company with other telecommunication carriers introducing the technology later in the year.

Vodafone intends to introduce the service here next year.

Questions were raised from those who attended the presentation on which technology was better, unwired broadband or ADSL.

Ms Dugan said both were good technologies, however, unwired broadband was better in that it could be used anywhere without the need for a telephone line.

Connect and Telecom recently announced their offer of ADSL service. Unwired Fiji, a company owned by I-Pac, is offering wireless broadband and expected to roll their service this month.
